Alphasteel Melt Shop - Newport

Alphasteel was the original name of the greek-owned company that operates Liberty steel Newport, which was originally built in 1974. As with so many of Liberty group's UK purchases, steel production on this site has had a troubled and storied history, with various disputes occurring through the years over ownership of the mill and its assets. The hot-strip mill was actually entirely rebuilt whilst still under the ownership of Alphasteel in the year 2000 but the cost of doing so threw the company into financial trouble and it closed in 2007, to be bought out by Russian oligarch Vadim Varshavsky and reopened under the new moniker Mir Steel a year later. By 2013 the mill was again under threat as Mir Steel collapsed which led to the mothballing of the site for two years, only to be saved by Liberty Steel's purchase of multiple UK sites including Dalzell and Rotherham.
However, this section of the steel mill, the Melt Shop, was left untouched. As such, it slipped into decay until around 2024 when it was demolished.
