Asylums & Hospitals

"There they stand, isolated, majestic, imperious, brooded over by the gigantic water-tower and chimney combined, rising unmistakable and daunting out of the countryside-–the asylums which our forefathers built with such immense solidity to express the notions of their day. Do not for a moment underestimate their powers of resistance to our assault."
Enoch Powell

St Cadoc's Hospital
What used to be Newport Borough Asylum, but later renamed to St Cadoc's Hospital, is still in use but to a very limited extent. More than half of the hospital stands derelict and decaying in the same decor and style it bore during it's asylum days. Not many examples like this left in the country.

Vagrant Cells - Melton Mowbray
Not very extensive but these historic cells once accommodated homeless people during a time when it was illegal to sleep on the streets. Quite an interesting experience being inside them as they felt like prison cells.

High Royds Asylum
Not a huge amount remains from this once huge asylum in Menston. However, what does remain is surely some of the most stunning and beautiful parts of the asylum; the admin block, the main hall and many of the corridors. It's a great place to see with some great details still in incredible condition.

Standish Hospital
This relatively small hospital is really out of the way and as such quite untouched. Some really nice art deco touches too. My visit here was a little short unfortunately but enjoyable nonetheless.

Picture
Frenchay Hospital
A very emotional set of visits for me as I live so close and used to play around the site as kid. I know the place extremely well and for me it will be sad to this disappear as it has always been a part of my childhood.

Picture
Frenchay Hospital Mortuary
The beautiful mortuary of Frenchay Hospital has been disused for approximately five years.

Picture
St Clements Psychiatric Hospital - East London
A relatively untouched psychiatric hospital that still contained patient art, beds, some odd cells and there was even postal orders scattered around. One incredible place.

Picture
Brecon and Radnor Asylum - Talgarth
Located in Talgarth, Brecon this original Asylum closed in 2000. It is of a beautiful design covering 8 acres.

Picture
Severalls Mental Hospital
A stunning asylum located in Colchester. It contains the most beautiful corridors I've ever seen. I've enjoyed this place immensely on both of my visits.

Picture
Cane Hill Asylum
What was left of this once grand asylum. Only the water tower, admin block and chapel remained when I explored this in 2012. Demolition, vandalism and arson have taken their toll on this site. Cane hill was once deemed the 'Holy Grail' of derelict asylums in UK due to it left almost untouched. Patient belongings still remained within the asylum for years after its closure.

Barrow Gurney Hospital
My first real explore. A local hospital that I visited with various friends over the years.
